Post reflection on "The Soldier"

Young men in Singapore will have to go through National Service. I will not be an exception. Many will ask why National Service is compulsory and important in Simgapore. In my opinion, National Service is very important to Singapore. Singapore might not even survive without national service in the early independent years. In the past, Singapore has a very small population and many of them were not skilled. National Service is introduced for Singaporeans to protect their own country. Singapore is a very small country and could be easily attacked and conquered by other countries. However, we can all prevent these incidents from happening with National Service. Thus, National Service and Singapore are interdependent.
In this poem, "The Soldier", Rupert Brooke express his love for his country, England and he  is willing to sacrifice for England where his homeland was. However, this was not common in Singapore. The same spirit of patriotism for Singapore somethimes could not be found here. Some possess this kind of spirit but some do not. Some examples are moaning and complaining about the life in an army. This shows that this army man do not like to protect his homeland and it goes to shows that he does not even love his country at all. Another example is the previous article that shows an army men goes to army with his maid carrying his backpack. This shows that his attitude is wrong. One should be willing to sacrifice for his homeland and not do it reluctantly.
I feel that I will not follow in their footsteps. I should be happy to sacrifice for my country as Singapore is the country who shaped me and watched me grow up. So, I feel that I will have the same spirit of patrotism for Singapore like Rupert Brookes because it is my honour to protect Singapore from any attacks.

June Holidays Book Review 2

My second book review is about an adventure book called Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson. This describes about teenage boy who is named Jim Hawkins. He is the son of an innkeeper and his life is transformed forever when old pirate Billy Bones comes to stay at the Admiral Benbow inn and he draws Jim into a world of treasure, adventure on the high seas but this are all done with deadly danger. In this story, teenage Jim finds himself with the key to a fortune. For he has discovered a map that will lead him to the fabled Treasure Island. Little did Jim know that the island was filled with a host of villains, wild beasts and many deadly savages stood between him and the stash of gold. However not to mention the most infamous pirate ever to sail the high seas who is bloodthirsty buccaneer Captain Flint. I find this book very insteresting as it describes the horror incidents detailed and keep the reader in suspense in almost every incident, enticing the reader to finish the book.

June Holidays Book Review 1

My book review 1 is about an adventure book called The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain. In this book, there is a main character named Tom Sawyer. There are many incidents inside the book which most of them, Tom is up to mischief. There was once in this story Tom's aunt wanted him to paint a fence. He was there painting but soon got bored. Then, a few of Tom's friends saw him painting the fence and they were very curious so they decided to try it out. In the end, cunning Tom was sitting there, resting and waiting for his job to be done, getting lots of items traded from his friends just for painting the fence. After that, when Tom's aunt went to see how Tom was doing but was very surprised when she saw the fence painted beautifully and completely. Then, she rewarded Tom a big apple for the work done. This incident shows that Tom is actually a very smart boy and quick thinking. He knows how to turn disadvantages around into advantages. Another incident was when Tom and two of his friends, Joe and Huck, went to camping. But they left without telling their parents and aunts. In the end, their families got very worried and still after a week, there were no news of them. Eventually, they gave up looking and planned for their funerals. Tom heard the news when crept home silently so he went to tell his friends the surprise. They got very excited and waited for the day which they will be attending their own funerals. This incident once again shows Tom's mischievious acts. I realised that some funny and horror incidents in this book are components which made the book interesting.
