Rupert Murdoch's Phone Scandal

The news media should be blamed for the unhealthy paparazzi culture and going to the extremes for sensational news. How far do you agree?

I partially agree with this question only because of a few reasons which I will mention in my points in this blog prompt. This question needs further examination and we will not be able to determine the answer to this question. Firstly, I feel that the news media should be blamed partially for the unhealthy paparazzi culture because they are the ones who exaggerated the news. They exaggerated the news because they want to attract more readers and earn more money. But they did not care about the feelings of the victims. How would they feel when their personal information is exposed. Will it be fair for them? In some cases, the news media even cooked up a story that was not there in the first place just to earn money. How will the victims feel after they were being maligned? Thus, the news media should be blamed for exaggerating the news without considering about the feelings of the victims involved in these cases.

However, we should not put the blame entirely on the news media. There are cases where the news seemed to be true. In these cases, we should also direct the blame to the people who are much involved in these cases. They are the ones who started these scandals first, so they should have the solutions to resolve these problems. Thus, we cannot place the blame entirely on the news media and these are also several factors we can consider. Thus, I only partially agree that the news media should be blamed for the unhealthy paparazzi culture and going to the extremes for sensational news.

True Justice and Mercy in Merchant of Venice

After reading through the trial scene in Merchant of Venice which is Act 4 Scene 1, the most important theme in this trial scene is justice versus mercy. So, there is always questions asked about this scene.
Is there true justice? In my opinion, I will say that there is not really true justice in this scene. Shylock wants a pound of flesh from Antonio as a form of hatred but Portia only merely twisted the words in Shylock's bond which is cutting a flesh from Antonio but not dripping a drip of blood. We can use another example to prove if true justice is done. A person bought a plot of land and wanted to use it to build something. But, another person comes along and says that he did not buy the air that is enclosed by this land so he does not have the rights to use this plot of land. So, is this true justice. The answer is an absolute no. In reality, the true justice in Shylock's case should be the pound of flesh since Antonio did not repay the debt in time. However, Portia gave Shylock the "justice" that he wants which is not true at all. It is unfair to Shylock in this case when Portia twisted the words int he contract.
The next question will be if there is true mercy as expounded by Portia? I do not think so. The true mercy should be that Portia let Shylock go when he gave up the pound of flesh. However, Portia did not do so. Portia did not show mercy. She forced Shylock into a corner and Shylock does not have a choice but to give up his estate in the end. This is the same as taking away Shylock's life and his freedom. Thus, we may feel that Portia has gone overboard and is a little inhumane. Portia felt that Shylock should deserve his punishment and therefore, she forced him to give up everything. This is not even "mercy" at all. In my opinion, this is cruelty. Portia could have let Shylock go which is then the true mercy.
Justice and law could be manipulated by people in power. I feel that this is true. In Merchant of Venice, Antonio should be punished for not repaying his debt according to Shylock's bond but it was Shylock who got the punishment instead. So, justice and law could be  manipulated easily by people such as Portia. Portia just twisted and manipulate the words in the bond and the law and justice was turned against Shylock. There is another example where there is a speech made by Bassanio," In law, what plea so tainted and corrupt, But being seasoned with a gracious voice, Obscures the show of evil?" This means that even in law, if your case stinks, a smooth talking lawyer can make it smell sweets and cover up your dirty acts. This can also be related to real life examples where criminals get away from the charges when lawyers help them to cover up their criminal acts. Therefore, I agree that justice and law could be manipulated by people in power.

Education in Singapore

I do not quite agree with the issues that the student has raised in the article. There are a few points that I want to voice out and disagree. Firstly, I want to comment on the point where the student said that education is only about memorizing facts here and there and they are not given a chance to ask questions in the class. I personally disagree with this point because I feel that in Hwa Chong, we are not treated in that attitude. Probably, it is because we are studying in different environments so we have different mindsets. In Hwa Chong, we are not told to memorizing facts but instead learn them in a different manner. I also disagree with her point that we are not given opportunities to ack questions in class and be inquisitive. In fact, it is absolutely the way round! We are given a lot of opportunities instead. We are always told to have group discussions and voice our own opinions in lessons. We also have a component which is oral communications. This component is to teach us to communicate more in class so that we can be nurtured into a leader. Therefore, I disagree with these two points.
Secondly, I also want to disagree that PCME lessons are totally useless. In Hwa Chong, we are given PCME periods to learn more about moral values. Thus, these lessons are not useless at all. Instead, it is teaching us to be more mature. However, I do agree in primary school, our moral education lessons were often taken away just because we need to catch up with the syllabus. I still rememberes in primary school, when I was primary 6, our CME and social studies are taken away just to learn more about the core subjects to prepare us better for PSLE. However, that does not mean that these lessons are meaningless.
I feel that the wirter's tone is quite appropriate. She does not use some violent words and have verbal attacks on the minister. Also, I feel that her comments are polite towards the minster. However, I feel that her comments are a bit too exaggerated and too straightfoward. This might let the minister to think that he has not done well enough. All in all, she seeks the minister's understanding and thus I feel that this is a well crafted letter.
If I were to write a letter to the minister of education, I will raise some issues on solutions to improve the education in Singapore and to give the students studying in Singapore a more condusive environment. However, I would say that Singapore is pushing too much and forcing the students to learn. Probably, there could be some solutions to this problem. This is not at a healthy studying lifestyle for all of us. I feel that we should work together to improve the education of Singapore and not put the blame entirely on the minister of education.

For Love or Money

So, is money important in a relationship? In my opinion, it is not necessarily so. But, I can agree money is only a small factor in a relationship and I think that true love is the real major factor in a relationship. However, I will not be with someone that is necessarily rich. I will only consider the amount of love between us. Think, will the relationship between a couple be a blissful one if it is only for money? The answer is no of course. There will not be care towards each other and their mindset will be just full of tactics to get hold of neach other's money. However, money is something that a couple should work together for in order to make their lives more comfortable and better. If a relationship started because o money, this relationship will not last at all because there is not any true love between the two of them. I feel that we should not start a relationship because of money nor even trying to play with other's feelings and cheat them of their money.
I think that there is an upward trend of relationships and marriages valuing money over other qualities especially, love. Nowadays, people are getting more materialistic. They only value a relationship for money. They only want to live off the other person just because he is rich. They only care about money. What is so special about having money? Everyone should know that love is something that money cannot buy with. Thus, I feel that we should try to treasure love as much as we can. Money does not matters. It is true love that actually matters.

How has war evolved from the past to the present?

War is something that is happening for a very long time for the past thousands of years. War is something that nobody will want because it takes away peace. But, how has war evolved from the past to the present? War still have its characteristic today--violence and killing. Everyone knows that war is about killing and taking away lives from innocent people.

The major difference between wars in the past and in the present is the weapons used. War is gradually evolving. In the past, very long ago, war were being fought with swords and arrows. However, guns were introduced into the battlefield by the Europeans. Then, cannons were invented. More and more weapons were being invented. In the present, when technology were more advanced, bombs and even powerful guns were invented such as the machine gun and the sub-machine gun. With these powerful weapons evolved, the violence in war has also increase. There will be cases where a bomb will kill innocent people.

Thus, I can conclude that war has evolved through the weapons used and the increase of violence and killing.

Post reflection on "The Soldier"

Young men in Singapore will have to go through National Service. I will not be an exception. Many will ask why National Service is compulsory and important in Simgapore. In my opinion, National Service is very important to Singapore. Singapore might not even survive without national service in the early independent years. In the past, Singapore has a very small population and many of them were not skilled. National Service is introduced for Singaporeans to protect their own country. Singapore is a very small country and could be easily attacked and conquered by other countries. However, we can all prevent these incidents from happening with National Service. Thus, National Service and Singapore are interdependent.
In this poem, "The Soldier", Rupert Brooke express his love for his country, England and he  is willing to sacrifice for England where his homeland was. However, this was not common in Singapore. The same spirit of patriotism for Singapore somethimes could not be found here. Some possess this kind of spirit but some do not. Some examples are moaning and complaining about the life in an army. This shows that this army man do not like to protect his homeland and it goes to shows that he does not even love his country at all. Another example is the previous article that shows an army men goes to army with his maid carrying his backpack. This shows that his attitude is wrong. One should be willing to sacrifice for his homeland and not do it reluctantly.
I feel that I will not follow in their footsteps. I should be happy to sacrifice for my country as Singapore is the country who shaped me and watched me grow up. So, I feel that I will have the same spirit of patrotism for Singapore like Rupert Brookes because it is my honour to protect Singapore from any attacks.

June Holidays Book Review 2

My second book review is about an adventure book called Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson. This describes about teenage boy who is named Jim Hawkins. He is the son of an innkeeper and his life is transformed forever when old pirate Billy Bones comes to stay at the Admiral Benbow inn and he draws Jim into a world of treasure, adventure on the high seas but this are all done with deadly danger. In this story, teenage Jim finds himself with the key to a fortune. For he has discovered a map that will lead him to the fabled Treasure Island. Little did Jim know that the island was filled with a host of villains, wild beasts and many deadly savages stood between him and the stash of gold. However not to mention the most infamous pirate ever to sail the high seas who is bloodthirsty buccaneer Captain Flint. I find this book very insteresting as it describes the horror incidents detailed and keep the reader in suspense in almost every incident, enticing the reader to finish the book.

June Holidays Book Review 1

My book review 1 is about an adventure book called The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain. In this book, there is a main character named Tom Sawyer. There are many incidents inside the book which most of them, Tom is up to mischief. There was once in this story Tom's aunt wanted him to paint a fence. He was there painting but soon got bored. Then, a few of Tom's friends saw him painting the fence and they were very curious so they decided to try it out. In the end, cunning Tom was sitting there, resting and waiting for his job to be done, getting lots of items traded from his friends just for painting the fence. After that, when Tom's aunt went to see how Tom was doing but was very surprised when she saw the fence painted beautifully and completely. Then, she rewarded Tom a big apple for the work done. This incident shows that Tom is actually a very smart boy and quick thinking. He knows how to turn disadvantages around into advantages. Another incident was when Tom and two of his friends, Joe and Huck, went to camping. But they left without telling their parents and aunts. In the end, their families got very worried and still after a week, there were no news of them. Eventually, they gave up looking and planned for their funerals. Tom heard the news when crept home silently so he went to tell his friends the surprise. They got very excited and waited for the day which they will be attending their own funerals. This incident once again shows Tom's mischievious acts. I realised that some funny and horror incidents in this book are components which made the book interesting.

HBL Task 2

Rainbow DeathAmerica did not foreseeGreen, pink, purple and other colors death potpourri!Expecting others to pay a high price. Now thinking twice?Toll on the innocent and unborn.Omnipotent and disregarding who will mourn.Reflective about all the illness, birth defects and prematurely dead. All the deceit continues to spread.Nefariously America led astray -Generations untold WILL pay -Execrable effects of agent orange spray!Point of view: This poem is written by Hubert Wilson, who was actually a Vietnam War veteran. He was greatly involved in this war and completely disapprove of this gruesome war. But in the end, through tough battling in the war, he finally manage to see the horrors of having a war.Situation and Setting: The situation was very serious and uncontrollable back then as many soldiers including allies were killed innocently due to Agent Orange. This was unexpected and something that America did not manage to foresee. However, the situation worsen when America wanted to make the enemies pay but they do not know that what they are doing are actually wrong. This will only kill more innocent people. There will be more revenge to be taken and more sufferings going on but many more are going to die because of the excreable effects of Agent Orange. Language and Diction: Hubert Wilson used many solemn words such as deceit, nefariously, mourn to enhance the mood of the poem by making the poem sound more sad and solemn. This is to let the readers have an emphathy towards the innocent soldiers who have lost their lives in the war and disapprove what America has actually done.Personal Response: I feel that wars are cruel. Wars take away lives  and make people homeless. War caused unccessary bloodshed. From this poem, I learnt a lot about modern warfare and how technology have improved over the years such as Agent Orange but this unexpected warfare is going to take away lives when used in the war. Thus, I feel that everyone should live peacefully instead of having fights and wars to disrupt the peace.

HBL Task 1

Poem Analysis of Rainbow Death:
Background: This small poem is about a modern day ingredient of warfare that has caused appalling death and suffering – not only to its intended victims, the Vietnamese people, but also the service personnel that used or even just came into contact with “Agent Orange”. In fact, it is everyone that is involved in the war that get infected.

Wikipedia reports, “Agent Orange is the code name for a herbicide and defoliant—contaminated with TCDD—used by the U.S. military in its Herbicidal Warfare program during the Vietnam War.

According to Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, 4.8 million Vietnamese people were exposed to Agent Orange, resulting in 400,000 deaths and disabilities, and 500,000 children born with birth defects. This is a very serious matter and it is explained in "Reflective about all the illness, birth defects and prematurely dead" in the poem.

From 1962 to 1971, Agent Orange was by far the most widely used of the so-called "Rainbow Herbicides" employed in the herbicidal warfare program. During the production of Agent Orange (as well as Agents Purple, Pink, and Green) dioxins were produced as a contaminant, which have caused numerous health problems for the millions of people who have been exposed.

War - A Personal Response

War – A Personal Response
This war will never end. Most of the soldiers have sacrificed their lives in this war. Bullets from guns were all around the place. The rattling of the machine guns was audible in every minute. Soldiers were focused on the war in order to win and defeat the enemies that were killing their friends. Dead and injured bodies were all over the ground. Guns were also lying around on the ground. Bombs were occasionally heard. This was an unbearable sight. Two soldiers were attending to another soldier that was lying on the ground.
He was bleeding profusely but still semi-conscious. He was right in front of a detached house but the house was destroyed in the battle. The injured soldier was moaning and whining for help. It was a painful one but he felt that it was right to serve and sacrifice his life for the country. One of the soldiers was shocked to see his friend to be in this state. He rushed over with pieces of paper to try to stop the bleeding. The other soldier was keeping a lookout to ensure there were no enemies up ahead.
The soldier tried to be meticulous in bandaging the wound so as to minimize the pain of the injured soldier. Bright red blood gushed out from his nose and trickled down his face. It was also a very solemn sight to see the injured soldier in this terrible state. But in wars, deaths are definitely inevitable.

Recipe to making banana split sundae

How to make a banana split sundae
Making a banana split sundae is not as difficult as you think. You will need of course, a ripe banana, if you want it to be nice. You will also need good quality ice cream and the flavours do not matter. Here are some suggested toppings: two to three tablespoons of raspberry toppings, caramel or hot fudge sauce. You may need some lightly sweetened cream, chocolate sprinkles and also a cherry or two. Now, you are able to start making your banana split sundae!
Firstly, rinse and dry your banana before you proceed into peeling it. Split the banana into half. Then, place them in each side of the serving bowl. After that, place three scoops in a row, between the banana halves. You may top each scoop of ice cream with your toppings.
Next, you will need to garnish your banana split with the lightly sweetened cream so that it will taste sweet. However, you are recommended not to put too much cream over the toppings as you will cover the pretty effects of the toppings. After that, sprinkle the chocolate sprinkles onto the cream. Then, you may choose to top the ice cream with the cherry or two. Then, your banana split sundae is completed! Now, you can serve immediately!

Informal letter of encouragement to Japan

BLK 57 Compassvale Bow,
The Quartz,
#10-14 S(123456)
30 March 2011
  Dear Mr Nick Jones,
I am Darryl Ling from Hwa Chong Institution in Singapore. I have read the events and news about the Japan earthquakes and tsunami for the past few days. I happened to read through your article and I was touched by your speeches.
I really sympathise with the incidents that happened in Japan. Our school has been collecting funds to help Japan and we are also trying our best to benefit the people of Japan to overcome these disaster crisis and economy crisis. I have learnt a lot of the damage that the disasters had done to the big city of Japan, the destruction of buildings, nuclear plants and reactors.
I also know that the radiation levels are now Japan’s main concern. I heard that the radiation levels are still on the rise and could cause death. I am here to encourage you that the survival of Japan is not over yet. I believe that Japan could recover completely from these crises. Although many had lost their lives in the disasters, we should live in depression.
We should be more optimistic about life instead of having negative thoughts. You should thankful and grateful for the fact that you and your family survive the Japan earthquakes and tsunami. I felt sorry for you and your family as the place you are living in is very dangerous and this forced you to move to other places. Nevertheless, we should always think positively, forget those unhappy memories in the past and look forward to the future.
Regards,
Darryl

Final draft of my short story

My short story

‘All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.’ However, this boy was the complete opposite. The only thing that played on his mind were computer games. He did not even pay any attention to the teachers when in school. The only things that he would succeed in beside computer games were not handing in homework on time, infuriating the teacher and playing truant just to stay at home to play computer games. As a result, his results dropped terribly and he was perpetually punished by his parents.
Soon, it was the Primary 6 mid-year examination. Even though the examination was just the day after, he did not prepare for the test and continued to play computer games. “Stop playing!” His mother’s loud voice echoed in the air. “Not again!” He thought to himself. He immediately slammed the door shut in his mother’s face and went back to his usual routine…
It was the time to give out the report card. The report card was slowly placed on the boy’s table. He had prepared for the worst. And, his fear came true. On the report card, there was big and red ‘F’ word. But the unexpected thing was that his report card came with a slip of paper while the others did not. He carefully opened the slip of paper and was shocked to see the words ‘I want to see your mother or father today. Please bring him/her to my office.’ followed by the principal’s signature.
After school, as usual his mother came to fetch him from school. He slowly walked to the gate, heart pounding rapidly. The question of whether to tell his mother or not, kept popping out in his mind. Once his mother saw his anxious face, he knew that something had happened. “Give me your report card.” His mother requested. The boy tried to act foolish and pretended nothing had happened. However his was shocked out of his mind when she said, “Now!”
The report card with the paper was handed over. She paused for a while, looking at the trouble and mess that he had got himself into. She dragged the boy and proceeded to the principal’s. In the office, the mother pleaded to give him another chance. However, the principal seemed reluctant and said, “He will only bring down our school reputation. We don’t want notorious pupils.” She had no choice but to use the last resort. In front of her son and principal, she went down on her knees and pleaded pitifully. Still, the principal did not react.
With the anger building inside, she gave a tight slap on his face in front of the principal. The principal was stunned to see this. He immediately said, “We can give him a chance.” As a result, the mother thanked the principal profusely. The boy knew that when they get home, he had to face up to the dine. From then on, the boy decided to turn over a new leaf and for the better.
He worked very hard in the remaining few months and promised to himself that he would score better marks in the end of year examination, PSLE. Since then, he did not even touch the computer for one second. He did his homework on time and revised his notes whenever he went home. Time passed very quickly. It was the release of the PSLE results. It was the day that he could truly prove to everyone that he had really worked hard.
The principal went up on the stage and announced the results. He paused before announcing the top scorer for the school. He told the school that this score and improvement was an unexpected one. Everyone, including the parents was anxious to know who the unexpected student was. The name was displayed on the screen. To the school’s surprise, the most familiar, notorious student went up onto the stage. There were chatters among the students, “Why… is he up there?” Everyone was astonished. The student who was previously infamous for playing truancy had managed to get the best result among the students.
There was a moment of silence, and then followed by loud applause by the parents and students. The hard work had finally paid off. He had finally proved to everyone that he could overcome the obstacles. Now, he could finally reassure his parents that in the future, he will not repeat his past mistakes again.

Create a story with a photo (setting)

"Whenever I come face to face with the swimming pool, the thought of this incident crippled me with fear." I always had a phobia of swimming. This happened because of this particular incident and it still frightened me till today. The luminous blue colour of the pool made me feel dizzy. And the incident vividly popped up in my mind once again...

Online work

Online work
1)      Discrimination against the Jews
-          Classified as Racial and Religion
Between 1935 and 1936 persecution of the Jews increased apace while the process of "Gleichschaltung" was implemented. In May 1935, Jews were forbidden to join the Wehrmacht and in the summer of the same year, anti-semitic propaganda appeared in shops and restaurants. The Nuremberg Laws were passed around the time of the great Nazi rallies at Nuremberg; on September 15, 1935 the "Law for the Protection of German Blood and Honor" was passed, preventing marriage between any Jew and non - Jews. At the same time, the "Reich Citizenship Law" was passed and was reinforced in November by a decree, stating that all Jews, even quarter- and half-Jews, were no longer citizens of their own country. This meant that they were deprived of basic citizens' rights, e.g., the right to vote. This removal of citizens' rights was instrumental in the process of anti-semitic persecution: the process of denaturalization allowed the Nazis to exclude.

2)      What are ‘concentration camps’
Internment is the imprisonment or confinement of people, commonly in large groups, without trial. The Oxford English Dictionary (1989) gives the meaning as: "The action of 'interning'; confinement within the limits of a country or place." Most modern usage is about individuals, and there is a distinction between internment, which is being confined usually for preventive or political reasons, and imprisonment, which is being closely confined as a punishment for crime. Internment also refers to the practice of neutral countries in time of war in detaining belligerent armed forces and equipment in their territories.

3)      What is ‘genocide’
Genocide is the ultimate expression of hatred and violence against a group of people and the deliberate and systematic destruction, in whole or in part, of an ethnic, racial, religious, or national group.
4)      What is ‘Mein Kampf’
Mein Kampf in (English: my struggle) is a book written by Nazi politician Adolf Hitler. In Mein Kampf, Hitler uses the main thesis of "the Jewish peril", which speaks of an alleged Jewish conspiracy to gain world leadership. The narrative describes the process by which he became increasingly anti-Semitic and militaristic, especially during his years in Vienna. Yet, the deeper origins of his anti-semitism remain a mystery. He speaks of not having met a Jew until he arrived in Vienna, and that at first his attitude was liberal and tolerant. When he first encountered the anti-semitic press, he says, he dismissed it as unworthy of serious consideration. A little later and quite suddenly, it seems, he accepted the same anti-semitic views whole-heartedly, which became crucial in his programme of national reconstruction. Becoming acquainted with Zionism, which he calls a "great movement," is what Hitler claims coalesced his view that one cannot be both a German and a Jew.

My short story

My short story

‘All work and no play made Jack a dull boy.’ However, this boy was of the complete opposite. Every time, the thing that always came up to his mind was computer games.
She dragged the boy together to the principal’s office although he was reluctant. In the office, the mother pleaded to give him a chance. However, the principal seemed reluctant and said, “With him, it will only bring down our school reputation. We don’t want notorious pupils.” She had no choice but to use the last resort. In front of her son and principal, she went down on her knees and pleaded pitifully. Still, the principal had no reaction.
With the anger building inside, she gave a tight slap on his face in front of the principal. The principal was stunned to see this. He immediately said, “We can give him a chance.” As a result, the mother thanked the principal profusely. The boy knew that when they get home, the consequences will be dire. From then on, the boy decided to change over a new leaf and for the better.
He worked very hard in the remaining few months and promised to himself that he will score better in the end of year examination, PSLE. Since then, he did not even touch the computer for one second. He did his homework on time and revised his notes whenever he went home. Time passed very quickly. It was the release of the PSLE results. It was the day that he can truly proved to everyone that he had really worked hard.
The student that was previously infamous for playing truancy had managed to get the best result among the students.
There was a moment of silence, and then followed by a round applause by the parents and students. The hard work had finally paid off. He had finally proved to everyone that he could overcome the obstacles. Now, he could finally reassure his parents that in the future, he will not repeat his past mistakes again.

Importance of Setting in a story

1. Where has each of the above stories been set?
Ans: In the Real Durwal by Jhumpa Lahiri, the story is set on the stairwell. In the adventure of the speckled band by sir authur Canan Doyle, the story is set in Watson's house. In pride and prejudice by Jane Austen, the story is set on neighbourhood in a town.

2. What time period has each of the stories been set in?
Ans: In the Real Durwal by Jhumpa Lahiri, the time period is set in the present, while in the adventure of the speckled band by sir authur Canan Doyle, the time period is in 1883, early April in the morning. In pride and prejudice by Jane Austen, the time period was set in the early 19th century England.

3. What clues do you get from the setting about the story it is going to turn out to be?
Ans: The setting of the Real Durwal by Jhumpa Lahiri tells us that the story was going to have a moody and unhappy feeling. The setting of adventure of the speckled band by sir authur Canan Doyle tells us that the story was going to have a suspicious and mysterious feeling while the setting of In pride and prejudice by Jane Austen, gives us a very amiable feeling and and gives us a loving effect.

4. Ans: The setting of the To Kill A Mockingbird is in Maycomb County. Scout, formally known as Jean Louise Finch, talks about how her brother Jem, older by 4 years, broke his arm badly at the elbow when he was thirteen. To this day she insists that the entire incident began with the Ewell family, the most wretched family in Maycomb County, but Jem disagrees. He believes that the whole thing started way back when Dill came from Meridian, Mississippi, to spend his first summer in Maycomb with his aunt, Rachel Haverford, the Finch's neighbor. To take a broader view of things, Scout suggests that it all started when General Jackson chased the Creek Indians north and Simon Finch, their ancestor, moved up the river and built Finch's Landing. Because they couldn't decide who was right, they asked their father, Atticus, and he says that they were both right. Scout begins relating the stories of her childhood that build up to the night that Jem broke his arm.

Telephone conversation

This is the poem.
            The price seemed reasonable, location
Indifferent. The landlady swore she lived
            Off premises. Nothing remained
            But self-confession. “Madam,” I warned,
5         “I hate a wasted journey—I am African.”
            Silence. Silenced transmission of
Pressurized good-breeding. Voice, when it came,
            Lipstick coated, long gold-rolled
Cigarette-holder pipped. Caught I was, foully.
10         “HOW DARK?” . . . I had not misheard . . . “ARE YOU LIGHT
OR VERY DARK?” Button B. Button A. Stench
Of rancid breath of public hide-and-speak.
Red booth. Red pillar-box. Red double-tiered
Omnibus squelching tar. It was real! Shamed
15         By ill-mannered silence, surrender
            Pushed dumbfoundment to beg simplification.
Considerate she was, varying the emphasis—
“ARE YOU DARK? OR VERY LIGHT?” Revelation came.
“You mean—like plain or milk chocolate?”
20         Her assent was clinical, crushing in its light
            Impersonality. Rapidly, wavelength adjusted,
I chose. “West African sepia”—and as an afterthought,
“Down in my passport.” Silence for spectroscopic
Flight of fancy, till truthfulness clanged her accent
25         Hard on the mouthpiece. “WHAT’S THAT?” conceding,
“DON’T KNOW WHAT THAT IS.” “Like brunette.”
“THAT’S DARK, ISN’T IT?” “Not altogether.
Facially, I am brunette, but madam, you should see
The rest of me. Palm of my hand, soles of my feet
30         Are a peroxide blonde. Friction, caused—
Foolishly, madam—by sitting down, has turned
My bottom raven black—One moment madam!”—sensing
Her receiver rearing on the thunderclap
About my ears—“Madam,” I pleaded, “wouldn’t you rather
35         See for yourself?”

Introduction
Written in the first person narrative point of view, the poem “Telephone Conversation” by Wole Soyinka is a poetic satire against the widely-spread racism in the modern Western society. The poem is about a telephone conversation in England between the poetic persona seeking to rent a house and an English landlady who completely changes her attitude towards him after he reveals his identity as a black African. The motif of a microcosmic telephone conversation, therefore, is employed by the poet to apply to a much broader, macrocosmic level where racial bigotry is ridiculed in a contest of human intelligence, showcasing the poet’s witticism as well as his ingenious sense of humour.

Q1. This poem is full of colours not just that of skin, what you think these colours signify?
Ans:  This poem used many colours to signify different things in the passage. Firstly, dark and light was used and the metaphor " plain or milk chocolate" further creates a visual image for the reader to imagine the colour of the author. Dark and light was used most often and this may be because the author wanted to show the contrast between the author and the landlady. Next, the colours signify the discrimination of dark-skinned African-American as the landlady was very reluctant to rent the flat to the speaker. Lastly, the colours also shows that the speaker is a black and that he did not like being discriminated by others. This can be seen from the incident where the speaker keep explaining that he is not really that dark-skinned/black. In conclusion, the dark-skinned African-American were discriminated during the past and the colours used in the passage further enhance the dark-skin the speaker has. The conversation shows how unwilling the landlady wanted to rent the flat to him, showing the discrimination of dark-skinned African-American in the past.
Q2. What does their dialogue reveal about these two characters?
Ans: The dialogue in this poem reveals the different origins of the two characters. In stanza 1, which is the start of the conversation, the speaker was already asked about his skin colour and his origin. The landlady immediately felt the pressure as she was unwilling to take a dark-skinned African-American in. This poem shows that the two characters, the landlady and the speaker are white and black respectively. Many colours were then used to describe the different parts of the speaker. This may be because the author wanted to show the deep contrast between the two characters. The landlady may be convicted for renting her flat to a black because she was not really that reluctant to rent the flat to the speaker. There may be a rule then that a white could not help the black or something like that as the passage revealed that she was not really that reluctant from the "..." used. In conclusion, the two characters in the poem showed the deep "grudge" or different between a white and a black. This may be due to the discrimination of African-American in the past.

Q3. The poet dramatises a battle, who wins finally and why?
Ans: In this poem Telephone conversation by Wole Soyinka, a "battle" was happening with the winner being the speaker. This is because the speaker was insistent on renting the flat. The white lady was rather to rent her flat to the speaker and kept asking him questions. The speaker showed that he must rent the flat regardless of anything as he said, " I hate a wasted journey." The speaker seemed to know that he is being discriminated as he states, " I am African". He seems prepared for the battle as he had already told the landlady his origin. Then, as the whitelady tried to insult or humiliate him with the different metaphors like "plain or milk chocolate" and insisting that he is a black. He eventually won when he showed his anger. We could see that he is kind of angry from the different "Red" used in the passage to describe the surroundings, more for describing the atmosphere. He eventually said, " wouldn't you rather see for yourself?" in the last line of the last stanza. He seemed to be furious when the landlady kept asking the colour of his different body parts. In conclusion, the poet won the battle dramatised in the poem most probably because he was more well-spoken and because he was very insistent on renting the flat.

Harper Lee

Harper Lee

a.     About the author
Ans: Nelle Harper Lee was born in Monroeville, Alabama, the youngest of four children of Amasa Coleman Lee and Frances Cunningham Finch Lee. Her mother's name was Finch. Her father, a former newspaper editor and proprietor, was a lawyer who served in the Alabama State Legislature from 1926 to 1938. As a child, Lee was a tomboy and a precocious reader, and was best friends with her schoolmate and neighbor, the young Truman Capote. In 1944, Lee graduated from Monroe County High School in Monroeville, and enrolled at the all-female Huntingdon College in Montgomery for one year, and pursued a law degree at the University of Alabama from 1945 to 1949, pledging the Chi Omega sorority. Lee wrote for several student publications and spent a year as editor of the campus humor magazine, Rammer Jammer. Though she did not complete the law degree, she studied for a summer in Oxford, England, before moving to New York City in 1950, where she worked as a reservation clerk with Eastern Air Lines and BOAC. Lee continued as a reservation clerk until 1958, when she devoted herself to writing. She lived a frugal life, traveling between her cold-water-only apartment in New York City and her family home in south-central Alabama to care for her father.

b.     Biodata.
Ans: Harper Lee was only five years old in when, in April 1931 in the small Alabama town of Scottsboro, the first trials began with regard to the purported rapes of two white women by nine young black men. The defendants, who were nearly lynched before being brought to court, were not provided with the services of a lawyer until the first day of trial. Despite medical testimony that the women had not been raped, the all-white jury found the men guilty of the crime and sentenced all but the youngest, a twelve-year-old boy, to death. Six years of subsequent trials saw most of these convictions repealed and all but one of the men freed or paroled. The Scottsboro case left a deep impression on the young Lee, who would use it later as the rough basis for the events in To Kill a Mockingbird.
